PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - November 2011

Joanne Zentis Auerbach, MA, CTRS

Welcome to the NYSTRA website!

Thank you for visiting the NYSTRA website! Take time to explore. There is a wealth of information here for therapeutic recreation professionals, TR students, and others interested in the field.

The NYSTRA Board, which held its first meeting of the 2011-12 year in June, is working on a number of projects and initiatives to serve NYSTRA members and the field of Therapeutic Recreation. Here are just some of the highlights.

Annual Conference:

Conference co-chairs Tom McDonald and Susan Colletti are hard at work putting together the next multi-day conference, which will take place April 14 -17, 2012. They would welcome your input, good ideas, and assistance. Hospitality is being headed up by Lorrie Prescott and Cathy Diamond. NYSTRA has a well-earned reputation for great conferences. Be part of the action! (See the NYSTRA Board page of this website for Tom's, Suze's, and Lorrie's contact information.)

Additional educational opportunities:

The Downstate Conference—which NYSTRA co-sponsors with NYSRPS, METRO, LILSA, HVLSA, and WRAPS—is held every November. Other learning opportunities are in the planning stages as well, including the possibility of one or more webinars, so you can earn CEUs from the comfort of your own home or office!

Continued efforts toward licensure for Therapeutic Recreation:

NYSTRA whole-heartedly supports the work of the Recreational Therapy New York State Licensure Committee. The current focus is twofold: to move the bill out of the Higher Education Committee so that it can be voted on, and to assure a favorable vote once it reaches the floor. Your efforts are vitally important to move the licensure process along—by contacting your representatives and asking for their support. Watch for updates on this website.

Facebook and Twitter:

Did you know that there is a NYSTRA Facebook page and a NYSTRA Students Facebook page? Student liaison Brittany Raphael is also busy tweeting TR students about NYSTRA.

We would love to hear your ideas. If you want information about how you can get more involved, contact me or any of the Board members.

And a final note to those who are not currently NYSTRA members…

If you are proud of being in this wonderful field, if you want the field to advance, please consider joining. There is strength in numbers. Add to the strength of this profession by joining the hundreds who have already chosen to be part of NYSTRA! Click on the Membership link on this website. Membership in NYSTRA is very reasonably priced, and can pay for itself through conference and merchandise discounts.
