A Christmas Joke to Share & Spread to Cheer:
Three Convicts arrive at Heaven’s Gate. Saint Peter greets them at the gate. He informs
them that they were sent by mistake. However,
he tells them if they can provide evidence
of some understanding of the meaning of Christmas, they can stay. One convict reaches into his pocket shakes his keys, and says “Christmas Bells.” A second convict reaches into his pocket, pulls out a cigarette lighter, and says “Christmas Lights.” The third convict pulls out of his pocket a pair of panties, and shakes them over his head. Saint Peter responds,“You’re very inappropriate. You obviously don’t belong in Heaven.” The Convict responds, “But Saint Peter, these Panties are “Carol’s”

The American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) is the largest national membership organization representing the interests and needs of recreational therapists. Recreational therapists are healthcare providers who use recreational therapy interventions for improved functioning of individuals with illness or disabling conditions. ATRA was incorporated in the District of Columbia in 1984 as a non-profit, grassroots organization in response to growing concern about the dramatic changes in the healthcare industry. As a result of this response, ATRA has grown from a membership of sixty individuals in June 1984 to over 2,000 in 2009.
The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) is an organization of diverse, engaged and creative professionals dedicated to the belief that the creative process involved in making art is healing and life enhancing. Their culture is one of inclusion of people from all backgrounds, open to new concepts and artistic expression that continues to expand the effectiveness of art as a healing therapy. They are rooted in the experience of those who began this field and honor their legacy. The Association serves its members and the general public by promoting standards of professional competence and developing and increasing knowledge in the field of art therapy. The Association represents more than 5,000 members and 36 AATA State and Regional Chapters that conduct meetings and activities to promote art therapy on the local level.
Names and acronyms give people a handle on organizations and disciplines. Changing acronyms leads to confusion. ATRA is a relatively young acronym. What if all TR organizations follow suit? NYSTRA may become NYSRTA, WVTRA may become WVRTA, NETRA may become NERTA, WSTRA may become WSRTA and ITRA may become IRTA. These fine organizations are all chapters of the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA). This petty nonsense detracts from real issues facing the profession.
The American ART Therapy Association, AATA, did not get bogged down in such trivial minutiae. Presently, they are attaining licensure for creative art professionals throughout America. New York State Healthcare administrators inform me that this is "Golden'' because it insures third party reimbursement, jobs and good salaries. Suddenly, art therapists are up there with OTs and PTs. Music and Dance therapist are licensed in New York too.

For the past 10 years, my passion for creating more accessible yoga opportunities for people who have physical challenges due to MS and other health conditions has also created amazing opportunities to work with students who may never get to attend a regular yoga class.
I want to share that with you. Join me for a retreat weekend in the woods of eastern Connecticut for retreat and training. This training program offers tools that will enhance your skills as a yoga teacher and a wonderful retreat opportunity for you to take time out for yourself.
Teaching Adaptive Yoga for Multiple Sclerosis training will address the needs of students who are ambulatory and need some asana modification and the needs of students who require more hands on attention and a totally adaptive approach.
Yoga Therapy in Practice brings in other yoga tools for one on one and small group classes.
Multiple Sclerosis is the focus of this workshop but the skills are transferable to many other student populations with special needs.
The retreat includes overnight accommodations and meals at Camp Wightman on Billings Lake in North Stonington, Connecticut. (mailing address in Griswold, CT).
Enjoy quiet reflection on the lake, trail walks in the woods, get a massage, gather with friends and colleagues, morning yoga, evening restorative and yoga nidra, kirtan...

I am hoping someone in the Albany area may know of a TR job. I have experience in PM&R and long term care but want to stay away from LTC (not my thing). I am eager to try other settings (drug and alcohol rehab, community recreation, psych, VA, etc.) I'm open to exploring anything. I was recently laid off after 13 years at a wonderful hospital where I'd planned to stay for the rest of my career. Now I need to find something that I love as much. I'm trying to get names of people at local facilities. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Hi Everyone, First, thank you to the board and all the committees involved in coordinating this years conference. THANK YOU for all your volunteerism and hard work. Your efforts are not only noticed, but truly appreciated.
Secondly, thank you on behalf of all the founding members for your continuous recognition. We may have begun NYSTRA but it's the entire membership that continues to keep it growing. Hats off to all of you.
Lastly, some folks were talking about the financial restraints to keep attendance alive for next year. All I can say on that topic is: buy one less bagel and coffee a week and put it in your "NYSTRA conference" piggy bank or when people ask what you want as a gift, say "money toward my conference fund"! Thanks again. Enjoy the upcoming spring!

I do not have transportation to the annual conference from the NYC/Queens location. Is anyone driving there and would be willing to take me, also. Of course I would be sharing expenses. I would also be interested in a female roomate who does not smoke.

My colleague Tara Mounce and I are hosting a TR Directors division of NYSTRA. It will be dedicated to TR Directors only. There will be local chapters for the multiple regions of New York. We will meet every other month at a different facility (volunteer hosting of course, but you know we all love to have events at our facilities!). We will discuss current trends and problems, offer suggestions and swap ideas. This will also give us the opportunity to share our most recent survey experiences with each other.
The purpose of this new division is to take our profession to the next level. If we as TR Directors ban together we can achieve more than individuals struggling alone.
If you are interested in joining the Long Island division, please email me. If you are interested in being the host/contact person for a division in your area, please contact me for further information.
Thanks!

Happy New Year! I just wanted to let you all know that I finally have the activity videos available on one DVD. There are 2 short movies (approx. 4 1/2 minutes each) on one DVD. These are just perfect for promoting and celebrating Activity Professionals Week, employee orientation, facility staff in-services, meetings, seminars, and even as a leisure education program for the residents. For more information visit www.recreativeresources.com/videos.htm. Order today if you want these in time for Activity Professionals Week. If you haven't seen these movies yet, visit my blog to check them out at www.recreativeresources.blogspot.com.
