Hi Everyone,
I'm writing to let you all know that on Thursday, January 3, I will retire from the James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Bronx NY having completed 40 years of Federal service.
After Thursday, please use my home address and phone number and my email: unclemike10710@verizon.net for all correspondence.
I'm not going far, and certainly intend to stay active in Recreation Therapy. I hope to be at the conference in Saratoga in April.
Have a safe and happy New Year. Stay in touch.
Sincerely,

I work as director of recreation at an assisted living home where the recreation room has been made smaller and smaller to accommodate business and nursing needs of the home. At times, a lecture or a bingo game would be going on near people talking on phones -- sometimes loudly -- in a corner of the same room with little or no divider between them and the program. I have protested this to little gain and have moved some of the programs out of that room. On one occasion, I told the guests they deserve better than this. Logistically, it works better to have arts and crafts in that room but I'm thinking of moving that out too on the principle that this is not a fair working arrangement. My question: Do any of you reading this ever have to work in similar situations or do you have your own designated recreation area that when clients walk into it they know it is theirs for their leisure purposes. Would appreciate any comments.

I am a first year T.R. student in a 2 year diploma program in Canada. We were given the task by our instructor to ask T.R. professionals what they think are the MOST important skills a recreation therapist should pocess. We have already done some research into what employers expect, however a T.R. professional will have more insight on what it takes. Please reply to Michelle mmmm@sasktel.net

Dear Colleagues,
I am posting this message on behalf of ATRA's RT Medicare Project. This project addresses barriers in access by Medicare Beneficiaries to Recreational Therapy Services in Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities, Inpatient Psychiatric Facilities and Skilled Nursing Facilities. The exciting news is that very shortly, the US House of Representatives will be introducing the "Ensuring Medicare Access to Recreational Therapy Act of 2007". This legislation will assure that Recreational Therapy is among the mix of services patients will receive in these settings.
To successfully complete this process ATRA must raise $60,000.00 in the next 60 days specifically for the cost of lobbying this legislation through Congress. We need your financial support and assistance within the next two months to push this legislation through. Any contribution you give will directly support the RT Medicare Project lobbying and advocacy effort.
You may mail your donation by check to:
ATRA, 1414 Prince St., Suite 204, Alexandria, Va. 22314.
If you would like more information and to donate by credit card please contact me:tifkel@aol.com. or work phone-781-298-7840.
Thank you so much for your support of the Recreational Therapy Medicare Project!

Hi all: I just started a new position at St. Camillus Rehabilitation Center on the Brain Injury unit as the CTRS. If anyone has any suggestions on (age appropriate) programming with this population please let me know. I am looking for ideas for individual and group therapy sessions. Over the past 2 months this unit was being covered by the RT Director of the site and she was doing activities when she could. So unfortunately many of them are out of the routine of doing TR and I am looking for ways to motivate them to participate (after all their other therapies OT,PT, Speech)they are often very tired and just want to lay in bed. Any suggestions would be great or even resources for programming. I have found some things but need more. Thanks in advance. Hope all is well with everyone.

Hi All - We are looking into a recreational therapist for my 84 yr. old mother-in-law. She has full-time care in own home. She has a disease called vasculitis and is starting to show some signs of dementia and is depressed. We thought a few hours a week of crafts or the like might help. Can anyone point me in a direction? Thanks!

To all NYS employees and friends of NYS employees: Contract negotiations are well underway. One of the items on the table is the need for a location pay diferential for those of us who live in areas where the cost of living is extreme (Orange, Rockland, Westchester, 5 boroughs and LI).AT this past NYSTRA conference form letters were available for your signature addressing this concern. Thus far 10,000 people sent letters. More can't hurt! If you neglected to sign and mail one please go to: www.coalitionforlocationpay.com/letterform.asp
print it off, sign and mail it in. Thank you and Happy Spring!

Hello. I operate a small business providing exotic finch aviaries to nursing homes in and around the Tri-State area. People are constantly expressing how their lives have changed for the better since having been exposed to our aviaries. The therapeutic value to this product is beyond words.
I also offer a 2 week free trial for my clients to see first hand the benefits of a finch aviary. For more information, feel free to give me a call @ (845)642-0451. You can also check out my website-www.cuspar.com. I would like to thank Dr. Robin Kunstler at Lehman College for introducing me to this useful resource.
