Hi, I just wanted to let you know about a new TR book. The Bio-psychosocial Approach to Therapeutic Activities and Successful Aging,a guide for professionals working with the geriatric population, by Susan Brhel. This book includes the AMA current therapeutic procedural codes built right into the program. The book also includes the recreational assessment tool-R.O.O.F.-(Recreational Objectives Observation Forms) This tool has been used in a nursing home and a community option program and works well with any TR population. It was by listening to guests at this site who asked for particular assessment tools and mention wishes, that this book came to be published, so I hope many TR settings can benefit from these books. You can find out more about this book, other books, by going to qualitygeriatriccare.com Thanks Susan Brhel

TO ALL NYSTRA MEMBERS: The Patient and Family Library and Learning Center at New York State Psychiatric Institute marks the 5th anniversary of September 11th with a screening of the documentary film "Nine Innings from Ground Zero". This documentary film is an unusual look at the way the city of New York coped in the aftermath of 9/11, and how baseball became a symbol of strength and resilience. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate in this free event. Although the film is specific to September 11, we hope that the discussion will also touch on other traumatic events, such as the crash of American Airlines Flight 587, in which a community's capacity of resilience has helped its members to cope with the trauma and loss. Date: Tuesday November 14, 2006 Time: 5:45 - 8:00pm Place: NYSPI auditorium Light refreshments will be served. For additional information and flyers please contact HaeSun Nam at 212-543-5653, or Matt Gold at 212-543-5240 or at goldmat@pi.cpmc.columbia.edu.

I need ideas for activities with lower functioning residents. Our small facility already has sensory stim, story telling, and sing alongs. I'm doing a magazine scavenger hunt (as per Kathy Hughes idea), but I need more simple effective ideas that don't require a lot of preparation. I'm basically the whole dapartment at our 60 bed facility. Still looking for an 18 hour part-time person.(See job posting)Got any ideas? Send me an email with "low functioning" in the subject of your email. Thanks.

Licensure looks great on you resume. So does board certification. Professional credentials not only advance our profession but, demand stature. Does anyone want licensure and board certification? With the onset of disability, I realize the importance of TR. Presently I cannot climb into my canoe or Kayak. Does any CTRS know how to help a quadraplegic continue such a life long leisure persuit such as paddling? I also need legs to pursue getting the TR profession licensed and board certified. If interested please email me at csourby*msn.com

ATT: KURT I could not send this e-mail to that e-mail address u had on this guest book page because it kept bouncing back as "error" in your address it self! Sooo attached please find my comments that I was trying to send to you regarding NCTRC and ATRA! Dear Kurt, My Name is Ray Archer A CTRS Recreational Therapist from Long Island New York. I work @ Stony Brook Medical Hospital in Child Psychiatry. I saw your Question on the NYSTRA Web page.... and was just wondering if anyone responded to your question about NCTRC AND ATRA. NCTRC is the national certification organization for Therapeutic Recreation. They implement a Major Certification for the field. I'm not sure if this helps any... but if you need any more info... please feel free to contact me @ above e-mail Address. Good Luck. Sincerely Raymond J Archer MA/CTRS

Hello there NYSTRA! In case you have not received my emails, here is an update on the ATRA RT Medicare Project: (If you are not familiar with the Medicare Project, please go to the ATRA website-www.atra-tr.org/medicareproject/ for all the information you need.) As you may know, 50 Representatives signed the "Dear Colleague" letter in the House of Representatives last April. CMS did respond to Rep.Tauscher, however they did feel that no changes need to be made in the CMS regulations regarding recreation therapy. Therefore a directive from Congress will be needed to make the changes and it will probably be tacked on to a larger Medicare bill in 2007. There have been many delays, however 4 senators, including McCain and Grassley have sent letters of support individually to CMS. Senator Grassley in particular is important as he is the head of the Senate Finance Committee and has jurisdiction over CMS. Good News-ATRA is meeting tomorrow (May 1st) with several legislators regarding the Senate sponsors for the "Dear Colleague" letter and expects to announce the sponsors soon. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to the Medicare Project. Please think of making a financial contribution to the Medicare Project if you can. Any amount is helpful. You can go to www.atra-tr.org/medicareproject/ for more information and please check the ATRA website periodically for updates. Sincerely, Isabel Kellerman NYS RT Medicare Project Co-Contact

Would you like to have a passenger in your car to drive up to the Saratoga Springs Conference? I'd be happy to share expenses. I reside in Forest Hills, Queens and am close to the LIE.

I am creating a PowerPoint presentation about Therapeutic Recreation for NYSTRA members to use for educational purposes. I would like to include quotes from members about: Why do you like working in TR? Why did you choose the TR profession? What population do you work with? Please email me your comments by February 20th. Thanks!
