Hello members, You should be receiving your newsletter any day if you haven't already. I hope you take the time to fill out the various questionnaires and return them to help us better serve you. Two seminars on Licensure took place over the last two weeks and provided those attending an opportunity to express their views and share their ideas/knowledge on the topic. I will be elaborating on this, our latest board meeting, and other topics in the coming weeks via the President's Message. Advocate, educate, recreate. Enjoy the process.

We are pleased to inform you that NYSTRA has established a new committee entitled "State Recogintion Options Committee". This committee evolved from the NYSTRA multi day conference held this past April.

Robin Kunstler graciously hosted our first meeting at Lehman College, Bronx, New York. Over ten NYSTRA members attended.

The goal of the committee, chaired by Fred Greenblatt, past President, NYSTRA is to raise the standards of TR departments and TR personnel. Several issues were discussed including:
-The need to standardize and upgrade TR departments so they include a continuum of activities including leisure activities, recreation therapy and Therapeutic activities.
-The need to standardize TR college curriculums to support the development and upgrading of TR departments.
-The need to review and support the use of TR standards of practice.
-The need to change the State Department of Health Hospital Code to ensure requirements of a TR director are upgraded.
-The need to educate administrators and others regarding the importance of TR.

The committee has decided to focus on trying to get the State code changed for long term care facilities. At the next committee meeting the state code will be reviewed. Other state and national organizations will be contacted to see if they would be interested in working with this committee to help change the code.

If you have anye questions, would like to offer any informations or would like to serve on the committee, you can contact Fred Greenblatt either through email at: fgreenblatt@jhha.org or by calling Fred at 718-579-0213.

Please help me with a project for one of our American POW's in Iraq. Shoshanna Johnson, the female POW, is a niece of my co-worker. Shoshanna's family would like any cards, letters of support or anything else creative you can think of sent to them. So I am asking all of you who work in TR and your clients to join me in this project. For more information, please contact me.

Join the NYSTRA Book Chat once again! Over the last couple of years at the NYSTRA conferences, we offered a different kind of session – a “coffeehouse-book club” chat, where practicing therapeutic recreation specialists could talk about their beliefs in therapeutic recreation. First, using the popular book, “The Courage to Teach,” by Parker Palmer that all participants had read prior to the conference, we had a stimulating and reaffirming afternoon of deep discussion. Last year we returned to the classics and explored what Paul Haun’s “Recreation: A Medical Viewpoint meant in today’s profession. Comments from the participants in those sessions were overwhelmingly positive. According to participants, the session gave them a chance to engage in deep, meaningful discussion about therapeutic recreation, often missing in their day-to-day work world. We would like to again offer the coffeehouse book chat. In the field of therapeutic recreation we have long capitalized on individual’s strengths to increase their quality of life. Martin Seligman the renowned author of Learned Optimism asserts in his new book Authentic Happiness that we should be doing exactly that within therapy, our lives and careers. The research related to “positive psychology” provides a foundation for this book, which will be the focused of our dialogue. We ask that you read the book by Martin Seligman, Authentic Happiness: Using the New Positive Psychology to Realize Your Potential for Lasting Fulfillment, prior to the conference, to fully benefit from this session. The book is published by Free Press; ISBN: 0743222970. We hope you enjoy your reading, and look forward to a stimulating conversation! By Dr. Susan Wilson, Dr. Lynn Anderson and Dr. Vicki Wilkins

Has anyone used an evaluation tool to measure outcomes for a frienldy visitor program. The Director of Social Work at my facility asked me if there is such a tool used in TR. She is looking for something simple. I do not know of any standard evaluations in our field to measure outcomes for this type of program. If YOU do, please contact me. Thank you.

Good afternoon, I am currently working on my thesis for my Master's at Gallaudet University (Deaf university) in Wash. D.C.. I want to know more about remotivation and was wondering if anyone have any additional information about remotivation technique? I have been looking around for workshops but things haven't been successful. I work in a psychiatric hospital in Md. for almost 9 years as a CTRS.

After a few years as a social worker and a recreation coordinator, students ask me how much money they can make in the human services field of TR. The answer to this is, it's the wrong question. While yes, we have to be able to support ourselves, it is the wrong field for anyone who may simply be looking for a paycheck. The right question is, what can I do to make someone's life better today and tomorrow. To have the privledge to work in human services, you have to really have a life goal of making life better for the people you work with. Recreation therapy makes lives better today, considers carefully tailored goals for individuals as they get past today. The talent to do this is usally an innate gift to work with people and to love it so much, you would do it for free if need be. If you have a real love of people and want to touch them each and every day, without regard for culture, creed, degree of illness then TR is for you. The pay will follow but to be successful, to know you really have it in you to do this job, it is a secondary reason for wanting to be in TR. Love for the activity and the people you lead are your first priority above and beyond how much you get on payday.

Just want to say that I agree with Matt Gold's comments concerning the recent posting on the Job Mart. I am sure that many of us have had negative job experiences, however, we move on and conduct ourselves as professionals. The person who posted these negative comments should do the same. To the person who has posted negative comments about a job experience: I would respectfully ask that you do not use this forum to express your opinions about your experience. You have made your point but it is our intention to delete the current posting as well as any re-postings. This only costs NYSTRA time, effort and money, as we have to do this through our contracted web master - as a result you are only hurting the organization that provides this Job Mart service free of charge to NYSTRA members and non-members. I attempted to respond to you directly, but you have not had the courage to include your name, nor a valid e-mail address. It is always easy to express our opinions anonymously, where we do not have to be held accountable for them. I would be happy to discuss this further with you - I can be reached at (212) 543-5240 or at goldmat@pi.cpmc.columbia.edu. Matt Gold, CTRS President, NYSTRA
