The Coffeehouse Tradition Continues at the 8th Annual NYSTRA Multi-day Conference By Lynn Anderson, CTRS Vicki Wilkins Susan Wilson, CTRS At previous NYSTRA, conferences we have offered a different kind of session - a “coffeehouse-book club” chats, where practicing therapeutic recreation specialists could talk about their beliefs in therapeutic recreation. Participants in the sessions read the book prior to the conference and their reading was the basis for deep and meaningful discussion about the practice of therapeutic recreation. Feedback from participants has shown that individuals value this type of dialogue among colleagues. The two books we have discussed in the past were: The Courage to Teach by Parker Palmer and Recreation: A Medical Viewpoint by Paul Haun. This spring we would like to continue the tradition, but would like to solicit input from professionals in the field. Therefore, we would like it if you would send us suggestions on books that you would like to discuss in relationship to your professional practice. So here is our request! Please send a title and author of a book you would like to discuss at the conference. Send all ideas by October 31, 2002 to: Susan Wilson, CTRS P.O. Box 2000, Cortland, NY 13045, email swilson@cortland.edu or call 607-753-4966. In the winter, newsletter we will let everyone know the book we will be discussing at the spring conference. We look forward to another great session with your selection.

Hello, I am a recent graduate and could really use some advice from other recreation therapists. I was hired out of my internship into a position that I thought would really use my skills and instead its frustrating me. I failed to realize this particicular facility is only concerned with activities not recreation therapy.I am not treated as a professional in any capacity. All of the care planning and assessment tools are standardized all i do is check boxes ask a couple questions and sign my name, I created my own assessment just to keep my skills sharp. I feel like I am getting stale, I really love recreation therapy and every aspect of it is exiting to me. I guess that is why being in an activities department is so frustrating to me. I dont know if anyone can relate to this predicament but if you can I could really use some advice.

I saw an article in the NY Times last week that the Pataki administration is seeking licensure for several new professions, including what was called expressive counselors? Is anyone else aware of this? I think we need to find out if this is a threat to practice or an opportunity for us to be eligible for a license?

Has anyone read and used the book, Groupwork with the Elderly: Pinciples and Practice? Spiral, 92 pgs., Authors: Bender, Norris and Baukman. I would appreciate any feedback prior to purchasing. It is listed in Sammons Preston in the ADL Kitchen Supplies section. Please give me a shout if you have used this or any other materials that have been helpful in training staff and volunteers in conducting large group cooking/baking programs. Thanks!

To whom it may concern, I would very much like to work with Developmental disibilty population. I have over 30 years experience because my brother is in that population. I am 20 credits shy of graduating and currently working as a supervisor in the recreation department in a nursing home. Although I enjoy working with all populations, I would rather work and teach the D.D. population how to mainstream with society and share with them recreation techniques. Should anyone reading this letter have infomation on where to apply to please E-mail at the above address. Thank you for your concern. Mr.L

Matt, Bert, Fred, Daryl, Rose & all my long time friends... I wanted to let you know that while I didn't register for the conference (because I'm so far removed from TR), I really did try to visit because I want to stay in touch. I know this sounds contrived, but I WENT TO THE WRONG HOTEL! I went to the Sheraton which kindly called the Hilton, then the Holiday Inn where they got no answer, but which I later learned is where you were. I was so looking forward to seding everyone after so long...Hope the conference was as terrific as always & hope you are all doing well. Stay in touch.

It just keeps getting better! Denise and Justin, thanks for your hard work and leadership. You both set the tone that led to a successful, relaxing and smooth 4 days! To the Board and Conference Committee, thank for all your hard work and committment in these volunteer positions! I just got back to work and read Justin's e-mail regarding Laurie and Candace's comments about NYSTRA being a warm and welcoming family. This is so true. Anyone out there not yet feeling that way, I urge you to get involved some way. It has been so rewarding, not just at conference time, but year round as we reach out to the friends we have made through NYSTRA. Lastly, I apoke with Jeremy Cash about setting up an e-mail list for members working in Long Term Care to communicate more readily on issues and concerns. I will be sending out an initial e-mail in a couple weeks to get the ball rolling. Take care! Diane

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Just returned from an all inspiring week of conferences! First NYSTRA, thank you for providing such a wonderful, professional, and fun conference. The sessions were excellent. As always, NYSTRA reaffirmed why we do what we do. Later in the week I attended a local HVLSA meeting/workshop on a local park and what they are providing (very fun), and then yesterday; I attended the Unity, Hope and Healing conference at Pace University. The "theme" of this workshop was how WE are so needed especially after 9/11. This was sponsored by National,State, and local organizations. To share one more thought, it was also wonderful to see so many NYSTRA members/friends at these conferences. As Noelle said at NYSTRA we are truly a family. Hats off to all of you! You are not only wonderful, but truly appreciated!!!

Hello! My name is Mary Malicki and I attended the NYSTRA Conference in Saratoga. Several TR professionals asked me to share inforamtion regarding FIM/Assessments for TR. I have utilized three books to develop my own TR Screen and Assessment for a Rehab. Unit. CARF surveyors were pleased with the forms developed. The references are: Leisure Competence Measure-Adult Version by Marita Kloseck, M.Sc., CTRS and Richard G. Crilly, M.D. You can e-mail: mkloseck@execulink.com fro more information about this book. The second reference is:Community Integration Program-Second Edition (Harborview Medical Center) by Missy Armstrong, CTRS and Sara Lauzen, CTRS. Idyll Arbor, Inc. sells the book (425) 432-3231. The third reference I used was:Reference Manual for Writing Rehabilitation Therapy Treatment Plans by Penny Hogberg, CTRS and Mary Johnson, CTRS. I hope all of these help! I am seeking information regarding Recreation Therapy Consulting. If anyone has information please send along. I am interested in consulting on the east coast. How do you start, where, what's needed, etc.? Thank You!

Help! I am a Rec. Therapist in a nursing center and need some ideas. I have a resident who is, as of today, pulling the wallpaper and carpet off the walls and floors. I went and got an old wallpaper book, some burlap, and pleanty of carpet for her to shread and she has responded well. This is a woman with Lewey-Body Syndrome which I know little about. She isn't at risk for PICA, so that isn't an issue. She attends several recreation groups daily and goes out with her daughter often. Resident was asked if she was bored, and she stated "NO". Resident meets with her Social Worker as well as the Psychologist each week to talk and these staff were asked to help draw some conclusions, but have been unable. If anyone has some ideas, thoughts, comments, etc. please, please get back to me. It is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Credentials for certification are good for the profession. Regardless, policies, procedures and standards must be developed for service delivery. Each setting has unique needs for staffing levels and program guidelines. We need to formalize the standards for program implementation. I am often asked what are the required standards for staffing levels in various settings such as long term care, behavioral health, special recreation in the community, acute care, etc. There are lots of variables but no formal efficay based guidelines that we can site. If we had such guidelines we would be able to defend our staff requirements and thefore staff our departments appropriately.

There are such overlaps between TR and other disciplines that it is a feather in our cap to have exposure and or experience in other jobs related to the health field. Having worked in social services has helped my coordinator position in TR quite a bit especially since the WTC was destroyed here in New York City. Many of our conversations in Adult Day Health have turned to the attack, even those that are not political or spiritual in nature. I feel we rec. folks must be prepared to talk about it, and better than that, be prepared to listen to our clients who may want to talk about it. While we did have dedicated programs, and moments of silence and prayer the clients really seem to appreciate that we are prepared to put ourselves in the clients place when their concerns come up during groups. Making it direct and comforting has certainly brought my clients and I closer. God Bless America! Joe

I am new in this position and have been appealing to members for help through the NYSTRA newsletter. I know that everyone has difficulty trying to find the time to read the newsletter, as I do. I need help with public relations and would like to know if you would be interested in helping to outreach the schools in your area in an effort to promote our profession? Also, I would very much like to help set up treatment networks, whereby, members could interact with other members working with the same population. I thought that using the internet might be a way to facilitate this. People could be buddied up with others throughout New York State or people could set up conferences over the Internet. I am not a real expert on the use of the Internet but I have a feeling there are great possibilities. Two questions, what population do you work with? And are you interested in becoming part of a treatment network? Also, would you be interested in helping me figure out how to set up such a network system as I am nearly computer illiterate or technologically challenged? Please write to me and let me know yow you feel about these issues.
