Hey TR professionals! Especially those of you in the N.Y. metropolitan area. I need your input for my Sept.11th WTC article! Please email me with any special events, programs or activities you have initiated with your clients, their families and/or staff related to Sept. 11th. Think about it-Has your life or your client's changed? Have you initiated any programs using the creative arts? Any fund raisers? Please share your thoughts with me. There has to be some positive from such tragic events. I know at my facility we are presently making and selling ribbons, the proceeds going to the Red Cross. We also made 2 flag hangings and help a prayer service the afternoon of the 11th. Thanks to those of you who have responded already. I look forward to hearing from the rest of you! Isabel Kellerman

I graduated with a BA in sociology/psychology with a concentration in gerontology. I'm working as a R.T. assistent. My boss tells me I can get certified after a year of full time experience and an exam. I think she means as a C.L.P.? Can anyone clear this up so I don't have to have my new boss explain this to me? Thank you in advance for any help!

The events of September 11th had a profound impact on all of us, including the clients that we serve. We were all called upon in some way, as Therapeutic Recreation professionals, to help our clients express their feelings, fears and concerns for themselves, their families, New York and the world. I am inviting you to contribute to an article I am writing for the NYSTRA newsletter that will describe the many creative and meaningful ways that we helped our clients and continue to help our clients deal with this tragedy. Please email your stories and comments to me as soon as possible. Thank you so much. Isabel Kellerman-Tifkel*aol.com

I awoke Tuesday morning, turned on the radio, & heard the news of the tragedy. I'm originally from NY, some of you may remember me; I have been living in SF since last July. I got ready for work in a daze. When I arrived at the Jewish Home, the television was on in the Main Lounge, a small Auditorium directly across from the main entrance. I don't have a TV, & couldn't believe what I was seening on the screen. Our Activities department had a meeting, & it was decided to keep activities as usual on the units for people w/ Alzheimer's, whih is where I work. It was really difficult, but somehow, I found the strength to be present for the residents, & tend to there needs. I never imagined when I became a health care professional, that I would be called upon to serve people during a time when a tragedy of such epic proportion struck, that makes no sense to any of us, & sends us into a state of shock that is beyond anything most of us have ever experienced in our lives. My heartfelt prayers to all of you living in NYC. B'Shalom, Randy

To: All NYSTRA Memebers: I just got done reading Ron Beckers comments and I have to agree, my two years as member at large has been a tee-shirt experience. My math skills have improved 100%. Anyway all joking aside, the Executive board and members at large on this Association our #1 in my book. During my two years sending out Aprons & tee shirts and selling raffles at the conference for the Scholarship fund was a learning experience & fun. I too believe that everyone that is a NYSTRA member should get involved. I will still be taking photos at the conference so don't forget to smile........I wish you all a HAPPY and HEALTHY SUMMER.......

After sitting on the NYSTRA Board and co-charing two annual conferences, I would like to share some thoughts with my fellow NYSTRA members and visitors to this site. THANKYOU!!! It has been a very challenging and rewarding experience for me. I was first introduced to the organization four years ago. Because of terrific speakers and fellow conference participants, I became energized and inspired to become more active in the profession and this organization. I found that by stepping out and taking a risk, I made new friends, was able to network with other professionals, gain new experience, and feel better about myself and what I was able to share with others. As time went on, I felt more confident and went back to school for my Masters. I share all of this because I have gained much from others in the past two years and I want to thank the individuals who I have worked with both on the board and the many volunteers who helped with the conferences. I want to urge everyone to seriously think about what they may have to offer to this organization or any other that promotes the TR profession. The return is tenfold on the investment of time and effort. Contact anyone on the board if you feel the urge to get involved, or drop me a line if you have questions about the committment involved. Have a great summer and don't forget to take time to recreate!

Hi! Hats off to a great conference and to all who contributed to its success. I have been a member since NYSTRA's beginning, never missing a conference. I've been a speaker, moderator and this year a committe member. This years's experience has been the most fulfilling and rewarding as a member to give back to the associaton. I strongly encourage you to think about joining a committee for next year's conference. The friends and connections you make as well as the experience you'll gain will surpass your expectations. A special thanks to Vanessa Vonseggren to your efforts and assistance in making my situation less stressful!

I may be a week beyond the Conference in my response to a wonderful experience, but my thoughts are still focused on the variety of workshops and the quality of the presenters. I only wish that there were two of me, because I wanted to be at several workshops at the same time. Thanks, Ron and Kim, and thanks to all the Chairpersons who worked to make this conference so great -- an educational experience and a wonderful time to meet and talk with all the members.

Hi there! I am a Recreational Therapist currently working at a long term care facility and recently a graduate of a 2 year therapeutic program at Douglas College in Canada. I am very interested in New York and how I might go about gaining employment there. Would any of my education or experience be valid there or would I have to start from scratch with education and credentialing? Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated. New York is very appealing to me and the possiblity of working there is exciting. Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks!

Hi...I have a Masters degree in Creative Arts Therapy and currently work as an Art/Recreation Therapist in a Nursing Home. I am considering obtaining CTRS status, but am not sure how to go about getting information. My background is in Fine Arts, but I do have several years work experience as a Recreation Therapist. I'm wondering if any credit is given for Life experience, I'm not sure how much of a commitment I can make towards returning to school (i.e. class schedule, financing, etc), being I do work full-time. I would greatly appreciate any information on this matter...Thanks very much :)

Many people overlook the field in TR. I am a student expanding the true practice of TR. Even though I am not certified, I will explain to my 'buddies' what TR really means to me. It the the wellness and promotion of a state of intrinsic reward only you can feel. It's all about feeling good, its about living, its about helping people!
