Hi there, My name is Dawn Simonsen and I have kind of an unsual situation.
Just after I graduated From Lehman College in 1995 I became physically disabled
by Lyme Disease. I've been sick and requiring full time nursing care for almost
five years. The good news is that in the past month or so I've had so many more
good days that i've started to look into places where I might be able to volunteer
in my area. There are a few concerns though. One is that when i come i must come
with my nurse. The other is that I will not be able to be a reliable volunteer
as I never know what my body is going to be feeling like one day to the next.
So i'm looking for some understanding and flexible CTRS working at a facility
that might be able to accomodate my needs to help me get back into TR. Before
I became disabled I had seven years experience working with disabled people in
various populations (I started when I was 14) It's very hard to get used to being
the one who needs help after being the one in the helping role for so many years.
I"m ready to help again!! Please please e-mail me if you know of any possibilities
for me or if you have any suggestions for me. Also while I've been sick I taught
myself web design and am always looking for TR agencies who would like a site
designed inexpensively. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. Sincerely,
Dawn Simonsen

I will be working on a project in the spring to try to develop a long term
care assessment. Most of the assessments I have seen are really leisure interest
finders. As we strive to become more accountable for what we provide, I feel
that we should have a more professional, standardized assessment tool. Please
send me a copy of the tool you currently use. I will be comparing them all and
trying to compile one tool we all can use. If you would like to assist me with
this project, please e-mail me. Send assessments to 6398 Pillmore Dr. Rome, NY

Would anyone know or is using a screening tool for prescriptive recration
therapy in Long Term Care (Section T MDS 2.0)? Some of the recreation therapists
feel the current assessment we use doesn't determine residents who need to restore
functional ability. Your thoughts would help.

NYSTRA'S Odyssey begins... Greetings present and prospective NYSTRA members!
After collecting evaluations and data, scouting for locations, and taking a short
respite, we are thrilled to share with you the lastest news regarding our 6th
Annual Multi-Day conference for 2001 and the journey we all continue to take
as professionals in the TR profession. We would like to thank all the attendees
at our last conference who shared many important thoughts and suggestions. We
have taken those suggestions to help guide us in selecting our next site. The
Huntington Hilton on Long Island will welcome NYSTRA on April 29,
30 & May 1st. This facility addresses issues you shared with us at our last conference
and provides a warm, sophisticated, caring, and amenable environment to meet
all our needs. On-site restaurants, luxury rooms, overabundance of meeting space,
indoor pool, and health facilities, and near-by entertainment for off-hour recreation
are a few of the reasons that make this site an ideal choice. More details on
the hotel and and program will be available in the months ahead as committees
and members work hard to put together another rewarding and educational experience.
We are proud and excited to annouce the Committee Chairs of our 6th Annual Conference:
Program Co-Chairs are Denise Horton & Debbie Farkash; Registration Co-Chairs
are
Steve Victory & Isabel Kellerman; Hospitality Chair is Maureen Brogan; Job Mart
Chair is Mike Abelson; Resource Room Chair is Marietta Fairchild; Photography
Chair is Sue Drumgold; and Awards & Scholarship Chair is Fred Greenblatt. "The
Future is Now" as we begin the new millennium. We look forward to the process
of putting together another conference for you & invite you to join us in whatever
capacity is comfortable. Feel free to communicate with us through the message
board or contact us by phone. Stay tuned... Conference Co-Chairs: Ron Becker

on November 15th at the Westchester County Center. Save the date and watch for
a conference flyer in early October. The committee is currently seeking presenters

I would like to suggest that a guest speaker lounge be created for presenters
at the next multi-day conference. As a presenter, I found it difficult to collect/review
my thoughts & notes without interuptions prior to going live with a presentation.
A place is needed where presenters can reflect & process their work. The hotel
also did not set up the room correctly for hands-on presentations. I had attendees
moving tables and helping me set up the room. This was quite distracting and
time consuming.

NYSTRA is happy to announce a new member service: a page for the posting of
job openings and internship sites. These listings had been posted within this
guestbook page, but now have a separate page within NYSTRA's web site. Thanks
to Charlie Dixon, who created and maintains the web site, for adding the page
to the site. NYSTRA encourages all TR directors who have job openings and/or
fieldwork opportunities to use this new page.

Question: I have supervised the field work of 3 students from the community
college this past year. Getting to conferences has been difficult with this responsibility.
DSoes anyone know if This responsibility qualifys for recertification. We have
a DDMR geriatric population and do many TR interventions with the students in
Hospice, as Leisure COmpanions and in the Day Programs at our institution. Another
point. Anyone know of an approved correspondence course or a subject I can take
over the internet that would meet this need for CEU's and recertification? Thanks
